AI Roleplay for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know

We tested every major platform to bring you this honest, detailed analysis. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is AI Roleplay?

AI roleplay is interactive storytelling where you and an AI take turns creating a narrative. You control one or more characters, and the AI plays everyone else. The AI adapts the story based on your choices, creating unique experiences every time. Think choose-your-own-adventure but infinitely more flexible.

Choosing Your First Platform

For beginners, we recommend starting with Character AI (free, great quality) or Candy AI (premium, best overall). Character AI is easier to start — browse characters and jump in. Candy AI offers more customization and visual elements.

Your First Roleplay Session

Start simple. Pick a character that interests you, read their description, and send your first message. Be descriptive but don't overthink it. The AI will meet you where you are. Use *asterisks for actions* and 'quotes for speech.'
